The radio galaxy PictorA – a study with the VLA
نویسندگان
چکیده
Detailed multi-frequency VLA observations of the prominent southern radio galaxy Pictor A are described. The radio structure is found to comprise very dim, nearly circular lobes with an extraordinarily bright and compact hot spot located at the western extremity of the western lobe. A faint jet is observed to connect this hot spot with the radio nucleus. No counter-jet is seen. The eastern lobe contains two hot spots of much lesser brightness and compactness. The radio lobes have significantly different spectral indices, with the eastern (un-jetted) lobe being ‘steeper’. Enhanced spectral steepening is found in the central regions surrounding the radio nucleus, and around the peripheries of both radio lobes. The eastern lobe depolarizes at a higher frequency than thewestern lobe, and also displays amuchhigher rms scatter in the derived rotation measure, although the mean rotation measure is very similar in both lobes. Steepening of the high frequency spectral index (λ6 cm to λ2 cm) is seen in the lobe near to the western hot spot. From the similarity in the structure of the western hot spot – including the extended filament – between radio and optical wavelength ranges it is concluded that all of the extended optical emission is due to the synchrotron process. The implications of these findings are discussed.

A multi-frequency study of the radio galaxy NGC326
We present preliminary results of a multi-frequency study of the inversion symmetric radio galaxy NGC326 based on VLA observations at 1.4, 1.6, 4.8, 8.5, and 14.9 GHz. These data allow us to investigate in detail the morphological, spectral and polarization properties of this peculiar object at different levels of spatial resolution.
متن کاملThe GOODS - North Radio Galaxies : On the Origin of the Radio Emission
We report on a preliminary study concerning the origin of radio emission within radio galaxies at L(1.4GHz)>1E24 W/Hz in the GOODS-N field. In the local universe, Condon et al. (1989) and Yun et al. (2001) have shown that in galaxies with radio luminosities greater than 1 × 10 23 W/Hz the majority of the radio emission originates from a 'monster' i.e., an AGN. Using the Chandra 2Msec X-ray imag...

In the frame of the study of a new sample of large angular size radio galaxies selected from the NRAO VLA Sky Survey, we have made radio observations of J2114+820, a low power radio galaxy with an angular size of 6’. Its radio structure basically consists of a prominent core, a jet directed in north-west direction and two extended S-shaped lobes. We have also observed the optical counterpart of...

We present new continuum VLA observations of the nearby Sy 1.5 galaxy NGC 5033, made at 4.9 and 8.4 GHz on 8 April 2003. Combined with VLA archival observations at 1.4 and 4.9 GHz made on 7 August 1993, 29 August 1999, and 31 October 1999, we sample the galaxy radio emission at scales ranging from the nuclear regions ( < ∼ 100 pc) to the outer regions of the disk (∼ 40 kpc). The high-resolution...

A sample of 37 nearby galaxies displaying composite LINER/H II and pure H II spectra was observed with the VLA in an investigation of the nature of their weak radio emission. The resulting radio contour maps overlaid on optical galaxy images are presented here, together with an extensive literature list and discussion of the individual galaxies. Radio morphological data permit assessment of the...
